my amazing music knowledge

So the local music station is doing a time machine weekend where they play songs only from one year every hour. On the way back from my Thanksgiving break tonight, they were doing 1981, which led to this train of thought:

"Man, every song that came out in '81 sounds like Bowie or Queen. Like this song. Wow, this really does sound like Bowie. And Queen. Who sang Under Pressure, anyway? Probably some obscure one-hit boyband."

Anyway, I'm back home and I have looked up the song, and now I'm not sure whether to feel embarrassed or vindicated. So this is a post to share my confusion, I guess.

I figure I get some leeway since I'm a decade too young for this song... Or at least I should get some credit for musical recognition!

But then I lose credit because I actually am a Bowie fan and should probably know these things.

See, I knew about it because of Vanilla Ice. I've been a Queen fan AND a Bowie fan for ages, but the whole sampling thing sticks out more than anything.

Now I want to listen to Bowie. And Queen. For days on end.

Ahhh, I didn't even think of Vanilla Ice! I've probably heard that song a lot more than the original Under Pressure, and it's a very distinctive bass line. (There's a ridiculous HP music video that uses Ice Ice Baby that I've since lost but I thought was hilarious three years ago. Vanilla Ice was kind of out of the spotlight before I started paying attention to music.)
