meme thing 2.0

I should be asleep, etc etc, but I've been working on Yuletide fic and homework and the weekend is coming up and I need something to keep me moving and not get stuck. So! Meme.

This is from LJ and then tumblr and I have no idea where it originated, sorry.

Pick a trope from this list and provide a fandom/pairing and I’ll tell you something about the story I’d write for that combination (i.e. write a snippet from the story or write not!fic or tell you the title and summary for the story I would write)

1. genderswap
2. bodyswap
3. drunk!fic
4. huddling for warmth
5. pretending to be married
6. secretly a virgin
7. amnesia
8. cross-dressing
9. forced to share a bed
10. truth or dare
11. historical AU
12. accidental-baby-acquisition
13. apocalypse fic
14. telepathy
15. High School / College AU

Anything I write will be solidly not!fic, probably, but feel free to give me whatever fandom. You can see the ones I've written on AO3, and I am also happy to write Skyfall Bond and any other fandoms you think I might know.

Whishaw!Q and Dench!M bodyswap. :D (Note: I haven't seen Skyfall or any other Bond film but I also have absolutely no problem with spoilers. I just really want these two acting each other in my head now I've thought of it, BECAUSE OF REASONS.)

Also, I think I will steal this meme. :-)

in 2 parts, because I can't even write short not!fic
OMG, what a good prompt. I am TORN, because on the one hand I would like to write a straight bodyswap where M and Q just switch places, and on the other hand I would like to write a post-movie story with Q and M bodysharing because HUGE SPOILERS, YOU SAID IT WAS OKAY, M dies at the end of Skyfall and I totally wasn't ready to let her go.

[Q tries to bring her back with technomancy, okay, it does not go well and he starts talking about exorcism because M keeps giving him disapproving looks from inside his own head, but Bond is totally not down with losing M again and it might be a story about resurrection and bodily autonomy but mostly it's a story about how M bangs Q's head into things whenever she completely takes over the body, because she's not used to being so tall.]

BUT ANYWAY, here is the actual bodyswap story while I think about the bodysharing one some more.

So Bond brings back some sinister technology found in an abandoned laboratory, and hands it off to the Q division. Who immediately start poking all of its many many buttons, because what else do you do with sinister technology. And they find that it does something really cool, like, idk, maybe it turns people invisible for a few minutes, or creates a signalling pulse that beats out the complete works of Shakespeare in morse code, or SOMETHING. So Q invites M down to the labs to see the cool things he has prodded from the strange technology, and all of the Q minions are gathered round, and M has her eyebrows raised, and Q presses the exact same sequence of buttons as he had pushed LAST time, and nothing happens.

And M looks at Q and Q looks at M, and Q's face goes very still and M says "Minions," and then stops, and then says "AGENTS," in a very high-pitched squeaky voice. "Agents, be about your business, this young man has obviously mucked up again, so I must scold him. In private."

"For heaven's sake," says Q, and all of the minions leave, slightly confused and sure that they're missing something.

"My voice isn't that high," says Q, who is M, obviously, but bodyswap names are confusing even when they're not just LETTERS, so let's call her MinQ.

"It doesn't sound right when I talk normally," says QinM.

This leads to a discussion of how everyone's voice sound kind of deeper and different when they're in their own heads, or someone else's head, as it were. And then they're like 'what the fuck should we doooo, shit shit shittttt' and they try pressing buttons for a while and that's how they end up being invisible for an hour but still in the wrong bodies and MI6 is starting to get restless.

(MI6 has lots of theories about what's happening in the room with the strange technology. Theory number 1 is that the tech released sex pollen and M and Q are OCCUPIED, because there's a trope I feel very conflicted about and which isn't on this list.)

second part
Anyway, after they've stopped being invisible M and Q just decide to grin and bear it for now (except not, because neither of them ever grin and people would notice immediately that something was wrong). They'll figure out the problem later, right now they need to WORK. So QinM gets a couple headsets and they try to coach each other through the day, and with a lot of bluffing and a lot of sudden headache attacks and canceled meetings, it all seems to work out. More or less. Everything would be okay, except QinM keeps moving slowly and pretending to be an old lady, even though M has NEVER been as slow and old as he is being, Q just doesn't pay that much attention in briefings or when he's being scolded and so he's relying on stereotypes. And people keep asking him if he's okay and he just says, "oh, thank you for your concern, young lady," in the still slightly high-pitched voice, which freaks them out even more and that's why half of MI6 is now convinced that M heard the joke they made about old ladies in command and is mocking them, specifically and individually, and they'll probably get fired tomorrow, why me, etc etc.

MinQ actually does a brilliant job of pretending to be Q, because she pays a lot of attention to the way people hold themselves, and the way they speak, she was a very good field agent in her time and she still would be if she wasn't better employed at home, but she KEEPS BUMPING Q'S HEAD INTO THINGS, this will never not be funny to me, height differences are my kryptonite and there's an eight-inch difference here, and MinQ swears every time she does it and then says "why are you so bloody tall" into the headset, and QinM says "I'm not tall at all, every man in my family has been over six foot, it's not my fault you're a tiny human being."

And then he says "do you have a stepstool or something, I can't get the cognac out of the top cabinet."

LONG STORY SHORT, by the end of the day no one suspects the truth, but MinQ might have a concussion, and QinM might be a little drunk, he doesn't have the tolerance he's used to because his bodyweight is so different, and this is when Bond swings by MI6 to see whether he gets to go kill any terrorists today.

I am not 100% sure what happens next, but I guarantee that QinM does not fool Bond AT ALL, he is nowhere near cold/approving enough toward Bond (to be fair, it's a hard balance to pull off), and Bond drags him down to find MinQ who doesn't even try to bluff her way out of thus, she just looks Bond up and down and tells him "your nostrils are much less prominent from this angle," because HEIGHT DIFFERENCES, I WILL NEVER GET OVER IT.

Re: second part
Thanks! And I will get to your prompt soon, hopefully - I'm still catching up on requests on the dreamwidth version of this post, but I'm nearly through :)

Re: second part
Oh, I have since read your dreamwidth responses thus far, and that was great fun. I lol'd at the Hornblower one, particularly the capslock and "That's what all the ripped up pages with WILLIAM BUSH HORNBLOWER written on them meant." =D The historical Skyfall is awesome, much more so with the actual historical parallels. (Q's costume needs some work, though... heh.) Also, thanks for the Moran family rec! There are too many Sherlock fics that bug me with the way they're written, so I really can't bear to peek in that fandom even if I'm desperate for something to read. (I've had incredible good fortune with the handful I have read, though.) Anyway, I liked these ones. ^_^

Re: second part
Hurrah, I'm glad you liked :) I was having a lot of fun with the not!fic until I got ambushed by essays, and I'm hoping to get back to it soon.

(And I'm glad you liked the fic I recced - I've definitely had fandoms where I liked the characters but couldn't read much of the fic, and it sucks.)

Re: second part
Essays, fun stuff. =/ Good luck!

*sigh* While we're on the subject of Hornblower, Hornblower. I tried valiantly but gave up on the fandom side of things half a dozen years ago. Maybe I wasn't looking in the right places, but everything at that time seemed to be non-con darkness. I've had overall good luck with the fandoms of the last two or three years, which is nice because I go on fanfic binges, I admit. (The latest of which, subject Moriarty/Moran, has driven me into the wilds of BBC Sherlock, where things are... weird. *shakes head at majority of Sherlock fans*)

Re: second part
Man, I never got into Hornblower fandom. I just don't really feel much of the fic, although I love the books and the movies. Aralias did just post a rec set for Hornblower that didn't sound terribly dark, if you're interested (I haven't had time to check any of the fics out yet).

I actually drifted out of reading/writing Moriarty/Moran this spring after getting tired of the weirdness of BBC Sherlock fandom, haha. Then I ended up immediately stumbling into Teen Wolf, where things are weirder and I can't read 80% of the fic because I can't read underage. I need some of your fandom luck!

Re: second part
Hornblower was the first fandom I tried to get into, but I didn't really get far - or even particularly involved - until House. Fewer crazies there, by the way! I did see the rec list, thanks, been poking around in there.

There are nice Sherlock fans, certainly, but it's the nutters who make the most noise. *eyeroll* I'm pretty happy with the canon/AGoS/etc. Moriarty/Moran people, though, and I have actually liked a few BBC fics... =) Eh heh heh, Teen Wolf, I've seen how that goes and I've only just been passing by. Poor you!
